Here are some of the major announcements made by the Prime Minister at the Conservative Party Conference this year. Many will have a real impact on us right here in the East Midlands...
- The new East Midlands combined authority will be given a new Regional Sustainable Transport Settlement of £1.5bn – an average of almost £1000 per person to support transport projects in our region.
- As a result of HS2 being scaled back, £9.6 Billion of funding will help with transport infrastructure in the East Midlands. £1.75 billion of this will deliver the Midlands Rail Hub in full, benefiting more than 50 stations and 7 million people to speed up journey times, increase capacity and boost frequency of services across the region.
- Over £2.2 billion to deal with potholes - one of the issues raised most often with me by constituents.
- Ministers and National Highways have committed to work with us locally to make sure we have the infrastructure upgrades we need for the East Midlands Freeport.
- New measures on smoking will be brought forward raising the smoking age by one year, every year - that means a 14 year old today will never be legally sold a cigarette. Measures will also be brought forward to restrict the availability of vapes to our children.
- A renewed focus long-term workforce plan for our health service to train enough doctors and nurses for the future.
- New rules will introduce whole life orders with no prospect of release for the most sexual and sadistic murders.
- A new qualification called the "Advanced British Standard will bring together A-levels and T-levels into a new, single qualification for our school leavers. All 16 to 19-year-olds will typically study five subjects as part of the new Advanced British Standard, including some English and maths to 18.
