Nottinghamshire’s Conservative MPs met with policing minister Kit Malthouse this week to make the case that the county’s police force needs more funding.
Brendan Clarke-Smith (Bassetlaw), Ruth Edwards (Rushcliffe), Darren Henry (Broxtowe), Tom Randall (Gedling), Ben Bradley (Mansfield), Lee Anderson (Ashfield) and Mark Spencer (Sherwood) all attended the meeting in Parliament.
They told the minister that Nottinghamshire has a metropolitan crime profile but is funded like a county force and this needs to be recognised in future spending rounds.
They also discussed policing priorities in rural areas and the importance of the planned 20,000 extra police officers.
Since the meeting, the Government has announced the biggest increase in police funding in a decade.
The amount of funding available to policing will increase by more than £1.1 billion to a total of £15.2 billion. This represents an increase of the core grant of almost 10% and will allow police forces to tackle the priorities of the next decade.
The group will meet again in the next few weeks to discuss the next steps of the campaign.
“I am grateful to the Minister for taking the time to meet with us and for listening to our concerns. We will continue to push for a new funding formula which takes better account of the situation on the ground now, not years ago. said Ruth Edwards.
“I want residents to be in no doubt Nottinghamshire’s Conservative MPs are fighting for our county with one strong voice and working together to lobby for the resources our police need.”
