Rushcliffe’s Conservative parliamentary candidate Ruth Edwards has thrown her support behind an online petition to secure a new pedestrian crossing at a West Bridgford school.
Teachers, parents and pupils, along with Councillors Gordon and Jonathan Wheeler, have been calling for a crossing at Jesse Gray School on Musters Road to help pupil safety and slow down traffic.
The matter has recently become urgent because the school was unable to recruit a school crossing patrol officer following the retirement of the previous one.
Cllr Jonathan Wheeler has submitted a request for the road safety measure to Nottinghamshire County Council, and it is hoped the petition, which already has more than 350 signatures, will show the local community’s support for the scheme.
Ruth visited the school last Thursday and spoke with deputy headteacher Fran Moore about the road.
Ruth said: “Parents, children and local residents need to feel safe crossing this very busy road, especially now there is no patrol officer, and I have given my support by signing this online petition, she said.
“It’s now up to as many local people as possible to join me so Cllr Wheeler can present the petition to the county council’s next full council meeting on behalf of the school.”
Fran Moore added: The Jesse Gray School Council feel strongly that our school needs a permanent crossing. They decided to discuss their concerns with Councillor Wheeler and this then prompted the petition. The petition now has over 350 signatures as well as the support from the whole school community but we still need more help from the general public. Please sign the petition so that The Jesse Gray School Council
